The commission for labour was set up by catholic bishops' conference of india in 1971 to the recommendation of the national seminar "Church in India Today" (1969) and the deliberation of the Roman Synod(1971) "Justice in the World".

‘Solidarity with the struggles of the working class and endeavour to promote the dignity of the workers’ 


• Publication and Dissemination of Social Teachings of the Church and other important materials on labour, migration and related issues.

• Capacity building of the leaders of the Church and the communities on matters of labour.

• Educate the workers on their duties and rights and help them to realise that.

• Formation of labour fora of the workers to effectively intervene in the policies and programs of the Governments

• Strengthen the national and regional labour movements to become effective instruments to reach out the poor workers.

• Formulate and effectively implement good labour practices within church institutions and organise social security programs for the workers related to church institutions.

• Provide HR Support to the micro and small scale entrepreneurship organization and institutions.

• Help the workers to form cooperatives, Self Help Groups, Joint Liability Groups etc., to help them to effectively link with the microfinance programs and credit linkages with financial institutions.

• Advocate with Government on labour matters and effective liaison with the authorities in the formulation of good labour policies in the country.

• Provide legal aid and services to the workers and other stakeholders for the better practice of labour laws in the country

• Network with likeminded organizations and institutions to further the cause of the labourers and migrants in the unorganised sector
